Dobok - clothing used for training

The Dobok for students has a black lapel.

The Dobok for Kyosanims (teachers of 1st to 3rd Dan) has a yellow lapel. In the context of Chon-Jie-In, yellow signifies humanity (In), in the one of the five elements (Oh Haeng) it symbolises the earth that creates nutrition for humans and animals. This stands for the black belt bearers’ duty to share knowledge with students, to nurture them and to be a fertile soil for their development.

The Dobok for Sabomnims (4th Dan, Master’s degree) has a red lapel. Red signifies heaven in Chon-Jie-In and points to the Sabomnims duty to care for the spiritual and human development of all students. In the teachings of the five elements, red symbolizes fire, its warmth and the workings of heart and spirit.
(Furthermore, the teacher’s Dobok shows a pattern of white diamonds running diagonally. This is meant to give students orientation in bigger groups.)
