Ddi - the belt

The Shinson Hapkido Dobok consists of long black pants and a simple jacket, both tied with a belt (Ddi). The belt is a symbol for the connection of body and spirit, up and down, humanity and nature.People who train Shinson Hapkido are supposed to take off the belt for eating, drinking and visiting the toilet.
While following the steps of the path, the colours of the belt change. The colours have the following meanings:
White (Mu) for emptiness and the white of winter. Yellow, orange and green for the colours of spring and blossoming. Blue, blue-red and red for the colours of summer and ripening. Red-brown, brown and brown-black for the colours of autumn and harvesting. The black belt stands for winter and completes the cycle as nature returns to its origins to start again in the following year. Similarly, black belt bearers are supposed to let their egos die and become a fertile soil for the following generations and start anew to learn. Therefore, when passing the black belt exam, the new black belt bearers receive a white belt as well.
